पुण्य सलिला पतित पावनी नर्मदा के पावन तट पर अवस्थित शासकीय नर्मदा महाविद्यालय, नर्मदापुरम् की स्थापना स्थानीय नर्मदा शिक्षा समिति के माध्यम से समिति के प्रेरणा-स्रोत मार्गदर्शक पंडित रामलाल शर्मा द्वारा वर्ष 15 जुलाई 1954 को की गई । अशासकीय महाविद्यालय के रूप में स्नातक स्तरीय बी.ए. की कक्षाओं से प्रारम्भ यह शिक्षण संस्थान अपने उदयकाल में शास. एस. एन. जी. उच्चतर माध्यमिक विद्यालय के परिसर में प्रारम्भ होकर उत्तरोत्तर प्रगति करता हुआ सन् 1961 में म.प्र. शासन से प्राप्त भूमि पर अपना भवन निर्मित कर सतत विकसित होता रहा । 1958 से बी.एस.सी, बी.काॅम तथा एल.एल.बी की कक्षाएँ प्रारंभ हुई तथा 1963 से 1968 के मध्य अंग्रेजी, राजनीति, हिन्दी, भूगोल, इतिहास विषयों में स्नातकोत्तर कक्षाएँ प्रारंभ हुईं । वर्ष 1964 में एम.काॅम. तथा 1968 में एम.एस.सी की कक्षाओं में विस्तार प्राप्त करता हुआ यह महाविद्यालय सन् 1972 में शासकीय शिक्षण संस्थान का गौरवास्पद पद प्राप्त कर जिले के अग्रणी महाविद्यालय की गरिमा से मण्डित रहा । वर्ष 2002 में उत्कृष्ट महाविद्यालय की रेखांकनीय उपलब्धि अर्जित कर 2003 से 2005 तक स्वायत्तशासी शिक्षण अधिष्ठान बना ।
